We chose to adopt from Guatemala for several reasons. We have many friends from all over Latin America, friends and family in Peru, and feel a deep connection to the people of Central and South America. North Carolina has a rapidly growing Hispanic/Latino population, and we are both involved in many activities that serve them. We both felt drawn to Latin America, and after researching adoptions throughout this area of the world, we discovered that Guatemala has some of the healthiest, youngest, and best cared-for infants for adoption in all of Latin America.
After talking it over for several weeks, we made our decision after a Schiele Museum dinner event. Brian, being his usual outgoing self, found us some seats across from a couple we didn’t know and we began talking. After socializing with them for no more than ten minutes they began to tell us of their adoption of a little girl from Guatemala. It was no accident that we sat across from them. We looked at each other and knew this was the country. We had no doubt in our minds that Guatemala was where we would find our child.
