39 weeks
I've made it to one week prior to my due date, and boy has this woman gotten large. I am still feeling fine, having a lot of braxton hicks contractions throughout the day and night. It's also gotten much harder to hoist myself up off the couch and roll out of bed at night, but otherwise no complaints. My nights are probably the worst since I have to get up about 5 times to go to the bathroom. Yesterday we finally finished the nursery (see photos posted) so we feel a little more ready. We also have our co-sleeper bed set up, ready for Joella.
My co-worker Robin who was due today ended up going into labor on the evening of the 17th and she had her baby Elisabeth Mae at 12:45am on the 18th. She had a short labor and a cute little baby girl. Baby Ellie was 6.5 lbs and 20 inches long. My other co-worker Ann Marie who is due February 13th is now on maternity leave and I had a cup of tea with her the other day. Her daughter is going to be named Bianca Mei. It's exciting to have friends going through the same new beginnings as me.
So essentially we could be having our little baby girl any day now. We sort of wonder how it will all begin - will my water break first, or will I start having regular contractions? Who knows, but I'll be sure to post when it all begins so anyone checking this website can know the birth is upon us. I'll probably be able to send out an e-mail within 24 hours of delivery since I plan on being at home.
Probably the next post will be that we're in labor or have had our baby Joella! Still undecided on the middle name, but leaning towards Lorelei because it's German and has significance. We do like Grace too. You'll just have to wait for the birth announcement to know for sure.

37 weeks, 3 days
This past weekend was a fun one indeed. My three girlfriends from college flew into town from San Francisco (Camille, Marielle, & Kristi) and stayed over for the weekend. They came into town for my shower which was on Saturday, but also to spend one last weekend with me before I become a mother. The shower on Saturday was lovely, great food, even better company. The tower of gifts was intimidating, but I tore through the wrapping paper with the excitement of a small child on Christmas morning. Seriously how can baby stuff be so exciting? Highlight: the two grandma's (Nana & Omi) gave me hand made blankets for Joella - my mum knitted a beautiful burgundy wool & multicolored silk blanket that matches the stroller she bought us, and Bev crocheted a precious pink striped blanket that I love.
After the shower me and the girls went back to my house and decided to go out to dinner in Westlake (Galetto's) and then I took them to Chapter 8, a club in Agoura that is very L.A. I did get a lot of funny looks being as pregnant as I am, but a lot of endearing looks from people who obviously already have children too. We made it to midnight and then called it a night. On Sunday morning we got up and the girls plastered my pregnant body - we did a belly cast that turned out really great. I will post pictures as soon as Marielle e-mails them to me. I still have to sand it down and then decide how I want to paint it, but it is quite a lovely piece of art already.
So today puts me at 2.5 weeks from my due date. I feel quite large and uncomfortable a lot of the time (mostly at night when I'm trying to sleep), but I'm still in good spirit. I had a massage this morning and a chiropractic adjustment, both of which made me feel better. My midwife comes on Saturday for one of our last appointments until I deliver. Things are getting close and are getting exciting. I will likely post updates on here as things start to progress, since I will be at home. I might be able to at least post that labor has started, then update it with a photo the day after Joella arrives.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year in one! We were busy as can be over the past 2 weeks - 12/22: my last day of work, 12/23: Bryan's 30th birthday, 12/24: Christmas Eve dinner at my in-laws, 12/25: Christmas Day dinner at Bryan's aunt & uncle's, 12/26: Drive to Tahoe (9.5 hour trip with all of our pit stops), 12/27-12/31: Tahoe, Bryan and my mum skiied and I hung out in the condo by the fire, ate great food, and gained a couple of pounds, 1/1: Drive back home (8.5 hour trip).
This week is my first official week of Maternity Leave from work. I won't go back until May 7th so this is quite a stretch for me without having to work. Right now I have time to get a lot done around the house (laundry, filing bills, organizing), but once Joella arrives that is bound to change. The real work will begin, as I like to say. That's why I'm not overly anxious to deliver early - it's much easier having her in my belly (albeit a little uncomfortable).
Tomorrow my three best girlfriends arrive into town for the weekend. They are coming to spend the weekend and go to my Baby Shower on Saturday (translation for those in EU & AUS: a US tradition in which all the women family and friends get together and play fun/silly games and "shower" the mother-to-be with gifts of essential baby items she'll need once the baby arrives). It should be a lot of fun.
Had an appointment with the back-up midwife Sue yesterday (my primary midwife Anna goes on vacation Jan 16-21). She said everything looks good, that the baby is long and lean and already around 7lbs by her estimate. She thinks she might be 8lbs+. Sue doesn't foresee me having any problems with delivery and is excited to be a part of it all (she will attend the birth with Anna as her assistant). Anyway, since I am off work I will likely have more time to update this website so keep posted. Cheers, Divo

34 weeks 2 days
So I am officially outgrowing my maternity clothing - what's the use of them if they don't even last you the full 9 months? Granted I was quite small to begin with so I bought XS and S maternity clothing, but come on how big can I get ;) My mother-in-law is amazed at how large my belly is, especially since I have a good 5-6 weeks left until I am due, and I could go late. I am extremely front heavy, which you can see from the photos. My belly is jutting straight out and I have to be careful not to knock it on tables and other obstacles that are waist high.
For being this far along in my third trimester I still feel relatively energetic and am not too uncomfortable. I am going to try to continue to enjoy my pregnancy and keep positive. I hope my tune doesn't change in a couple of weeks; I hear most women are really ready to be done with pregnancy around week 37. This past weekend was Bryan's 30th birthday party (actual birthday is Dec. 23), and I ended up on my feet from 10am shopping and preparing, until 11:30pm when I had to lay down in bed and not get up again. The party was a success despite the rain which ruined our plan of having outdoor seating for dinner.
Today is my fourth to last day at work until I take a 4.5 month maternity leave. I haven't been off work for more than 3 weeks in my whole life - since I worked through school and would work every Summer too. The month of January is going to be nice and restful, then when Joella arrives I am sure I won't be considering it a vacation anymore - then the real work begins. I dragged Bryan to a breastfeeding class last night (I know, bad wife planning this during Monday Night Football). It was super informative, but I think we both realize I am going to become a milk machine and end up attached to my baby 10-12 hours a day in the beginning. We also met with a potential pediatrician yesterday, Dr. Saul. He is not as close to us as we would like (deep in Thousand Oaks), but he is like-minded as far as medical philosophies goes, and is supportive of homebirth and natural remedies, etc. We will probably meet with some others that are in Camarillo, but I think the most important part is trusting the person that will help make medical decisions for our child.
Enough already, this is getting long. Love, Divo
Oh, photo of me in one of my shirts that still covers the bottom of my belly (gotta love Target).

2 weeks left of work until my 4.5 month maternity leave! Good that it's fast approaching since I am outgrowing much of my maternity wardrobe. I cannot believe how big I am getting, and to think I still have 7 weeks (or so) to go. This past weekend I had an appointment with my midwife Anna. I weighed in at a total gain of 30lbs (yikes) and my blood pressure and heart rate are great. Joella is still head down, but has turned to face sideways (my right side). Anna was able to tell by palpitating my uterus that she has the majority of her body (back and bum) on my left side, so all the movement I feel on my right side is her legs and arms stretching. Most of the movement now is slow and there is a lot of stretching going on so I end up with bulges of body parts sort of sticking out.
I am getting pretty frequent (not painful at all) Braxton Hicks contractions, which are practice contractions that can start anytime after 20 weeks. I all of a sudden feel my entire belly tighten, which is sort of cool feeling. This weekend was also my friend Ann Marie's shower. She works with me and is 2 weeks behind me. It was a lot of fun. The picture to the left is of me with my two pregnant coworkers Robin & Ann Marie. Robin is due one week before me. We are all having little girls (Elisabeth, Joella, and Bianca :)

31 weeks 1 day
One holiday down, one to go before Joella arrives! Thanksgiving was this past week/weekend and it was really nice and relaxing this year, with a small family dinner (only 11 people) at Bryan's aunt & uncles house on Thursday. Another family dinner on Friday at Bryan's parents house, and a trip up to Santa Barbara to visit with my mum on Saturday.
Saturday Bryan and I also met with our midwife Anna again. She measured my blood pressure, which was good as usual (103/64), and my weight (I'm up 25 pounds), and measured my belly (32.5cm). Joella is head down, and has been that way for the past 6 weeks, so looks like she likes to be in the ready position. She may be facing forwards though, which is not a concern now, but as it gets closer to delivery time we will want to make sure she is facing my back. I feel a lot of movements throughout the day, and some intense kicks/punches especially when I lay down. They are so strong sometimes they make me jump, and when Bryan has his hand on my side they make him gasp.
Just 2 more months to go. It is getting really exciting!
Love to all, Divo

30 wks 2 days
I love this week! This week is only a 3-day work week which is making it go by fast. This week I have also been feeling incredible baby movements. Everyday now, and throughout the day, I feel strong movements and kicks/punches - some so strong they shake my entire belly and are very noticable from the outside. This little one is letting it be known that she is awake and enjoying the food I'm eating, or trying to get comfortable (as I myself try) when I lay down to sleep. Whenever I get the chance I grab Bryan's hand to feel the movements and kicks and he gasps almost every time because of her strength. It doesn't hurt, which I find strange. If the same amount of force were applied from the outside I think it would hurt, but for some reason from the inside it doesn't.
This past weekend we spent 3 days in San Diego for Bryan's younger brother Chris' wedding. He and Heather had a gorgeous wedding and we all had a lot of fun. Bryan and I were so tired when we got back on Sunday though. Pregnancy wipes me out now, and I love the idea of getting in bed and watching tv or reading at around 8:30 or 9:00pm every night. Bryan is a little bummed that I can't seem to stay up as late as normal.
Anyway, this week is Thanksgiving, and then only 4 weeks left of work for me :) Four busy weeks, but filled with end of year celebrations. I can't wait for Maternity Leave!

27 wks 3 days
So I am officially in the 3rd trimester of this pregnancy and boy am I starting to feel it! Its now pretty uncomfortable most times of day as my belly has grown significantly in the past couple of weeks. This little baby has her feet up in my ribs already, and all the extra weight has set me up for back aches. I am having a hard time putting my shoes on and taking them off, or doing anything that requires me to bend over. All of this I say with a smile on my face since it's all so worth it in the end.
Only a bit more than 12 weeks until my due date! November is a busy month with my brother-in-law Chris' wedding on the 18th, then Thanksgiving the following week. My boss is also throwing me a little baby shower after work on the 9th, with my co-workers, so that should be nice. December will be my last month of work so that should be exciting (counting down the weeks already: 7.5 to go).
Last week Bryan's grandmother passed away, which was sad for the whole family, but she lived 91 great years. She had been in pain for the last few weeks of her life, suffering a stroke and then getting pneumonia. On Monday was her funeral. It was beautiful to sit under these giant trees at the cemetary that had been around for hundreds of years and feel the fresh air and think about Gran and how wonderful she was. Her body was laid to rest, but her soul lives on in each life she touched.
With Love, Divo

24 weeks 4 days
Over the past 2 weeks I think I had my second growth spurt or "pop" as people around me at work and strangers on the street undeniably know I am pregnant now. My belly button is getting flattened out, and although I hope this doesn't happen, ready to become an "outie" for the first time in its existence.
I started getting back aches a few weeks ago (ordered a great lumbar pillow for my chair at work), and things are getting harder to do - like bend over and pick things up, and tie my shoelaces. Sleeping is at times a challenge, and I find myself getting up to pee about 3 times a night.
Despite the pains associated with getting bigger (I've now gained 14 pounds), it is still an amazing thing to have happen, and feeling this little baby move and kick around inside is much less creepy than I thought it would be, and is actually really beautiful. My mum said to me the other day that she can't wait to meet this little one, and Bryan said the same last night. I guess for me she's inside and I have her with me all the time, so there isn't as much anticipation...yet.
This weekend is Heather's bridal shower, and the countdown to the wedding has begun (5 weeks left!). Starting this weekend things get busy and I am sure before we know it it will be the new year!

21 weeks 4 days
Not much to report lately, except for the fact that I seem to be getting bigger every week. In the mornings I wake up and think, oh, not too big, still look like I just have a little baby bump, but by the evenings my belly looks huge. I have been feeling the little one off and on, kicking (still feels like thuds) and turning over, which feels like a knot in my stomach. I have an anterior placenta which means its between the outside of my belly and the baby. Apparently this makes feeling movement from the outside harder, so Bryan has only felt her on isolated occasions.
It's been really exciting knowing we are having a girl because now people who have little girls tell us all about how wonderful they are. I have also enjoyed planning the nursery - we decided on the Pottery Barn furniture I posted pictures of on here (you can also check it out on our registry) and pretty pink & white bedding. The room is painted a really nice blue color and I think we're going to leave it like that since painting is such a pain. We will be adding a nice chair rail accent to the room though.
Well hopefully I have more exciting news next time :) Divo

19 weeks 4 days
We had our ultrasound on Tuesday September 5th, and were blessed to find out that our little one is indeed a baby GIRL! My mum was at the ultrasound with us, which was great. Everything looks good, and we have a follow-up ultrasound in 6 weeks because the baby has a small cyst that should clear up by that time. The doctor is not worried and gave us his blessings to pursue a homebirth with our midwife Anna.
We broke the news to Bryan's parents over dinner the same night, and they were thrilled to learn a little girl would be born into the family. This will be the first girl in the family since Holly was born (Bryan's younger sister, and she's 27!). Everyone is happy and excited to start buying cute little outfits :)

16 weeks 2 days
So Bryan and I have pretty much come to agree that we would like to have a home birth. We met first with my mum's friend Anna and talked with her at length about her experience as a midwife, statistics, possible complications and how they are handled, and the process in general. Last week we met with a Ventura midwife Karni and spoke in more detail about what her philosophy and services entails. I am not a big fan of medical intervention and being in a sterile hospital with bright lights, medical smells, and random nurses coming in and examining me sounds absolutely aweful. My vision is to have a fire going, dim lighting, soft music, and the support of my family there to help me through the pain of labor. We will go and consult with the OB/GYN at the clinic I have been going to in a few weeks to make sure he will support us if there should be complications, but overall I think we've made up our mind to have a natural home delivery.
Oh, I forgot to tell you all but two of my friends at work are also pregnant, both due near me (one on 1/21, the other on 2/13) and I know of a few other friends who might be trying ;) It's nice to have people nearby that are going through similar milestones as me. Also we can compare how each of us is growing. I know, I promised belly pictures, and I will follow through on the promise very soon. I will post pictures by trimester in the Albums section--the first trimester showing very little proof of a baby, but so far in the second trimester, let me tell you there is definitely a baby in there!
Until later, Divo

14 weeks 3 days
I had another appointment with the Woman's Place in Camarillo, and saw one of their lovely midwives. She answered all of our questions, and we mentioned that we would like to have a home birth, so we'll probably only go back there for our 20 week ultrasound and then start going exclusively to the home birth midwife for check-ups. The OBGYN at the Woman's Place, Dr. Fischbein, is one of the only one's locally who still backs up midwivery and homebirths, so that is great to know. We meet with him in September for our ultrasound.
Other than the appointments going well (heard the heartbeat loud and strong again yesterday, immediately upon the doppler being placed onto my stomach, and about 150 bpm), my symptoms have changed a bit. I no longer have the all day nausea (thank goodness), but if I don't snack between meals I sometimes feel it slightly. My belly is finally growing, so getting dressed for work in the morning is a challenge, and my pants are usually unbuttoned most of the day. I feel a little stretching going on in there, and its getting a little hard to find a good sleeping position. I have had adolescent-type acne for some weeks now, mostly on my chest and upper back, which I have never had before (gotta love those hormones). Oh yeah, and I seem to be getting a little more hair around my navel (luckily blonde).
I will try to post some belly photos in the album section this weekend, although I still sort of look bloated or full from a large meal.
Until later, Divo

13 weeks 4 days
On Monday Bryan and I went to a Perionatologist (specialist) to do the first trimester screening ultrasound. We opted to do the testing (for which they look for downs syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities) mostly because we wanted to have another ultrasound to make this whole pregnancy thing more real.
It was incredible. We had a half-hour ultrasound where the doctor looked at the baby from all angles and measured various parts of its anatomy as well as measured the flow of blood into and out of the umbilical cord. We were both so amazed at how much it has developed--it actually looks like a baby now, just in minature (it measured 7.5cm, actually 4 days ahead of where we thought we were). We got to see its heart, its brain, its ribs, spine, and other bones. It punched and kicked around as the doctor moved the ultrasound around my belly. The doctor said it was too early to determine gender accurately, so we'll wait another 6 weeks for that. We got a 7-minute video tape of our ultrasound and watched it again as soon as we got home--amazing!
It definitely feels more real now, not to mention my belly has begun to protrude--I may finally be beginning to look pregnant, although to an unkowing eye I still look bloated or full from a big meal ;)
Until later, Divo

12 weeks 2 days
So we passed the "safety" point of 12 weeks. Any risks are significantly lowered at this point. I don't feel that different, maybe a little better as far as the nausea goes, but I still have no desire to eat meat (I managed some ground beef--for some reason it doesn't bother me so much). Cravings are a different story. So far popsicles and fruit were my first cravings, and Taco Bell Mexican Pizzas always sound good.
Next week we are going to Century City to see a specialist to do first trimester screening on our little one--mostly so we can have an extra ultrasound. The only one we had was at 6 weeks and let me tell you, I felt like Rachel on FRIENDS when she starts bawling because she can't see anything on the screen. I saw a tiny circle and a little tadpole looking thing, but as far as looking like a baby, not even close. This appointment (at 13wks) will be a world of difference. At this stage the baby is fully formed, just miniture, and is pretty active already--kicking, punching, and dancing around--although you can't feel it until 16-18 weeks. I will post after the appointment and let you know what we saw.
Love, Divo

11 weeks 1 day
Today Bryan and I go in for our second appointment, and will likely get to hear the heartbeat on a Doppler. I have been feeling extremely tired, and have become the pickiest eater, as I have major food aversions, especially to meat. Last week we spent the whole week in Havasu with Bryan's family, which was great, but every night there was a different meat on the menu that I couldn't stomach eating, let alone smelling. So it was top ramen noodles and popsicles for me.
We are getting ready to tell our friends and family (well, those of you who don't already know) by way of this website. I hope its a nice surprise :)
Love to you all, Divo

9 Weeks
Well, things have been rough for the past 4 weeks. I have had all-day sickness and have been tired beyond belief. I guess that means my pregnancy hormones are strong, so that's a good sign. It's hard being at work all day, then I come home and crash for about an hour before I can even do anything. Bryan has had to make himself dinner a few times because I couldn't stand to be around food. Things will get easier in a few weeks (I hope).
We went to our first prenatal appointment together at 6 weeks 1 day and got to see the baby on the ultrasound and heard its heartbeat. How amazing is that! Our next appointment is in 2 weeks, so I anticipate hearing the heartbeat again with a Doppler.
More later. Divo
